FOREWORD
Elon Musk has established a string of commercial endeavors to pursue some “absurdly ambitious goals.” Tesla aims to transform us into a sustainable energy economy by ending our reliance on fossil fuels, and SpaceX wants to transport us to new worlds…! However, there are early signs these ambitions might actually be achieved through a purely commercial model. SpaceX and Tesla have extraordinarily efficient operations, from development through production to operation, which allows them to lower cost and make their products very commercially compelling. Both of these companies are regarded as the gold standard in their respected industries, icons to be emulated by any who wish to compete in these emerging markets. Yet neither of these companies are content with mere market dominance, their primary goal is to rewrite out future, so have the foot flat to the floor on the technologic accelerator. If they continue this course and Musk enterprises manage to change our world, what will it look like after such radical commercial surgery? Such strong stimulus will no doubt make mankind evolve in every sense: technologically, culturally, even politically – truly a brave new world.
“The Mission”
Essentially Elon Musk is achieving the seemingly impossible, e.g. converting our economy to sustainable energy, making internet ubiquitous around the world, even helping humanity to become a spacefaring species and preserve the light of consciousness in our long-term future. This vast effort promises enormous technological and societal change, in what could best be described as a step evolution. This might seem impossible because it falls outside the realm of our experience, we have no parallels or analogies to make sense of the situation. However, given all we know of these commercial plans, the destination can be seen with increasing clarity as it fast approaches.
For many years the science celebrity Neil deGrasse Tyson has denied Elon Musk could achieve his ambition to forge new worlds – but given recent events he appears to have undergone a Damascene conversion...
“Who’s going to influence society the most in the long run: Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos? I already have my answer it would be Elon Musk… What Elon Musk is doing is not simply giving us the next app that will be awesome on our smartphone, no he is thinking about society, culture, how we interact, what forces need to be in play to take civilization into the next century… Other people don’t realize it yet but we are on the frontier of the future of civilization. I don’t think he gets his full due from other sectors of society but ultimately he will when the sectors he is pioneering transform the lives of those who currently have no clue their life is about to change. Go Elon Musk, I don’t care if he gets high!”1 ~ Neil deGrasse Tyson/CNBC Make It

great stuff. How does Elon define "progress"?
