SpaceX have used their uniquely capable reusable rockets to create Starlink, the world’s largest satellite constellation. Currently it comprises ~ 6,000 satellites that beam broadband to more than 3 million people around the world – like a wifi router for planet Earth!
SpaceX’s mission is to make humanity a spacefaring species, so Starlink might appear an unnecessary distraction from their core rocket building business. However, over the past 22 years they’ve held more than 1,000 all employee meetings to discuss how best to achieve their goal and really dug down into the subject. Hence Starlink was part of their plans from the very beginning because it provides a number of key benefits to their mission, ranging from the relatively straightforward to really subtle.
